The area behind the beach road has experienced significant development. Several major high rise hotels are easily recognised from far offshore. Phuket Town is about 40 minutes away by Tuk Tuk.

FREEDOM BAY ANCHORAGE

15 miles from Ao Chalong

07°52.487N, 98°16.434E

Freedom Bay is a favourite day excursion by longtail boat from Patong and Karon. Access by road is possible, but involves a demanding hike down to the beach. Anchor in 10 metres on sand.

A small restaurant and vendor stalls cater to visitors. Off the small headland at the south of the bay, there’s good snorkelling and diving. In the deeper water off the north headland, the diving is excellent.

To the north, on the other sandy beach, is the Marriott Resort, Merlin Beach, accessible at high tide. From here it’s a short walk over the headland to the Tri Trang Beach on the southern end of Patong Bay, now dominated by the ultra-exclusive Rosewood Resort.
