KUPANG – WEST TIMOR

550 Miles from Darwin

KUPANG – WEST TIMOR. 10°09.562S, 123°34.580E

Approach from the Roti Strait through the Semau Strait formed by the islands of Roti, Semau and West Timor until you reach the commercial port clearly visible. Continue northeast around the headland to find Kupang Town.

Anchor in 5-9 metres on a mixed mud and rubbish bottom in front of the “Welcome to Teddy’s Kupang” sign painted blue on white in front of this well-known establishment. Best dinghy access is west of the creek mouth between the dilapidated jetty posts and the concrete breakwater. This gritty sand and pebble area offers the best dinghy-landing option in town. Teddy’s staff will help you with every need. If you don’t need anything they’ll still help. They speak their own brand of English, are pleasant, accommodating and cheekily entrepreneurial.

Plenty of activity ashore in this thriving Indonesian port town. Check in facilities are spread out and may take a half to full day to complete. The anchorage is 20 minutes to the airport, where daily flights depart for Darwin and Bali. The night oceanfront market, the colourful array of straw-woven hats and the never ending shouts of, “Hello Mister” makes this West Timor capital an enduring memory for any cruising itinerary.
