30 miles north of Koh Phra Tong, Koh Phayam – 10km long and 5km wide – is one of Thailand’s last relatively unspoilt islands. It is reminiscent of Koh Samui more than 30 years ago. Anchor at Ao Yai in 3-6 metres in the northern corner of the bay. If coming from the west, give the rocks off the headland plenty of clearance. Ashore, set back from the beach, there are restaurants and small, low-key resorts. For provisions, go to the village by the main pier.

Anchor at Ao Khao Kwai in 4-5 metres in the north of the bay. Make sure to check out the rocks formations at Hin Talu as well as the Hippy Bar, constructed mainly out of driftwood, much of it washed ashore after the 2004 tsunami.
