KOH KHAO YAI & KOH BULAN
The south entrance to the anchorage is the only option for deep draft keelboats. Enter mid-channel and motor slowly to your comfortable depth. This spot is magical. Shallow draft craft (less than 2 metres) can easily navigate the northern entrance, although we recommend a dinghy reconnaissance beforehand.
These two islands are uninhabited except for fishermen from local boats. Dinghy and sea canoe exploration of this area is best around mid-tide, when caves and coves are fully accessible. The small islets to the southwest of Koh Bulan are riddled with caves.
On the mainland, the small village of Pak Bara is the point of departure of the twice daily ferry service to Koh Tarutao and the Butang Islands. The channel north of Koh Khao Yai is navigable and lit for the small boat traffic from Pak Bara.
